So many Queenslanders are struggling to make ends meet. How can they afford Christmas?
If you’ve had to fill up your car, do a supermarket shop, or look for a rental lately, you’ll realise how expensive life is getting for so many. And wages and government support just aren’t keeping up.
Every day, our teams use your generous support to bring food, basics and some relief to Queenslanders who are doing it tough.
But our funds can only stretch so far, and the need in the community is overwhelming. UnitingCare Australia reports around half of people asking for relief are waiting or missing out.
It’s awful to think of people and families facing hardship alone, especially at Christmas.
This time of year is meant to be about special time with loved ones, sharing good meals and seeing the delight on children’s faces as they open presents.
But you might know the pressure of those expectations yourself. A lot of families we work with say Christmas just highlights everything they can’t do or buy.
These parents already feel distressed that they can’t meet their kids’ everyday needs. Then they have to crush their hopes at Christmas.
